The Roland-Garros Championships, played on clay, began in 1891 as a tournament reserved for French Clubs and only open to French citizens and residents. In 1925, the championships opened up to international players.
Wimbledon hosted the first major tennis tournament in 1877, and though the location has changed, the grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis Club are among the most historic in the world.
The US Open, played on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, New York, since 1978, began at the Newport Casino (home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame) in 1881. Specific events of these championships have also taken place at the West Side Tennis Club, Longwood Cricket Club, Germantown Cricket Club, Philadelphia Cricket Club, Orange Tennis Club, Staten Island Cricket Club, and St. George Cricket Club.
