England’s Fred Perry had a banner year in 1934, winning three of the four major singles championships. At the first major event of the year, he defeated Australian Jack Crawford 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. He also won his first of three consecutive Wimbledon titles and successfully defended his title at Forest Hills. Though he lost in the quarterfinals of the 1934 Roland-Garros Championships, in 1935 he defeated the defending champion Gottfried von Cramm of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to become the first person to achieve a career Grand Slam.
