William “Big Bill” Tilden reigned supreme over the world of tennis in the 1920s. A master strategist with a full range of strokes, Tilden was in many ways larger than the game he played. Imagine the United States Lawn Tennis Association’s surprise when Tilden—who retired the existing challenge trophy in 1922 after winning three consecutive times—retired this trophy after winning the championship the next three years, in 1923, 1924, and 1925.
